July 4th Americana Engagement Shoot

Last Fourth of July, we styled the most patriotic engagement shoot in Kennebunkport, Maine for our stunning couple, Erin and Eric. We were so fortunate to have an 80-degree, sunny day to set the scene for this engagement at the Boathouse Waterfront Hotel. Pinch Me Planning partnered with some of the best local vendors to pull this one off! Keep reading to hear about our vision for this styled shoot and to see more of the beautiful photos by Greta Tucker!

We truly wanted this shoot to be an all-out patriotic experience. Having the picture perfect Atlantic Ocean as the backdrop was our natural blue color for these photos. It became clear that we would add in bright pops of red using clothing, food, and decor to complement the blue tones. Of course, the American flag wouldn’t be complete without some white—so we made sure to choose a venue that had white accents to really round out these photographs.

Our sweet couple stayed at the harbor-side suite at the Boathouse Waterfront Hotel. Once there, Eric invited Erin up to the rooftop deck for a surprise proposal! We felt so lucky to have these two as our models—I mean just look at them; not only are they stunning, but Erin’s blonde hair and fair skin was a perfect canvas for all of that red that she pulled off. Naturally, a blue suit for Eric was best to ground the whole look and not overwhelm the photos with too much red.

Having fun with the decor was important to us as well—we wanted to create more visual interest in this shoot using not only color, but through pattern as well. We created a layered look mixing different patterns on the tabletop to do just that! We topped a red tablecloth with red-and-white striped napkins, then blue china to achieve this. The Strawberry, Vanilla, and Maine Blueberry macarons by Mainely Macarons was the perfect prop to continue the color scheme on the table setting. Additionally, the floral arrangement by Watershed Floral was a lovely punch of red to match the table as we thought any other color may get lost in photos against the blue ocean backdrop.

Finally, the beach picnic scene with classic red Coca-Colas was our favorite retro touch to this engagement shoot. As a whole, it was important for us to carry the red, white, and blue color scheme throughout every detail of this shoot. Once we nailed that, the next step was to complement in the smaller details with subtle stripes and hints of quintessential New England seaside flare. We absolutely love how it turned out!
